Engine smokes

The Pope usually holds his hands upward and outward so the smoke disperses easily.

If he brings his hands together to pray, the smoke stays right there, choking the papal congregation.

That's why he is usually depicted as having his hand out at an angle ... to disperse the smoke.

The above is the normal procedure unless the smoke is cannibis smoke, in which case the smoke is encouraged to stay in the room around the congregation. It promotes the munchies, which the Papal Pizza Hut satisfies, garnering profits for the inhalees.

Little known facts about the Papal Pizza Hut ... mocated near the Vatican, on Pizza Hut Way, near the Collesium where gladiators used to fight before having Pizza in mass quantities. There is tradition there ...

Thanks Evan and GreP, make excellent sense, guess that I should have thought about that. The opposed cylinders on a motorcycle engine, like Honda's goldwing will also smoke after they've been sitting on the kickstand for a long time. the tilt leaks oil into the lower cylinder bank

Yes. The big problem for radial owners who don't fly very often is hydraulic lock. That is, if a bottom cylinder fills with oil, the rod will bend if you force it through the stroke since the oil does not compress. The usual fix is to remove a spark plug and drain the oil, one cylinder at a time ... or sometimes to pull the prop through backwards, forcing the oil into the intake track.

Doing it this way is fraught with danger since the rod can still bend when you start it if the cylinder gets a big slug of oil when it starts.

Most engine manufacturers have a recommended method of dealing with the oil, and the owners usuallt follow the procedure to the letter if they want a keep from killing their engine. The Russian Vedeneyev M-14P radial is one that has procedures and they must be followed or the rods will bend. The Russians thought the procedures through very well, and they work! At least my friend who has been flying one in a Yak-52for more than 12 years hasn't bent a rod following the Russian procedures.
