Hi all,
For modelling purposes: I am looking for information and/or photos of a F4F Wildcat, that would've been flown by future ace Cecil Harris, during operation Torch. I haven't been able to find too many photos of VGF-27 Wildcats, while onboard USS Suwannee.

I would assume that these aircraft were in standard USN camo, with yellow around the national markings. A couple of VGF-27 Wildcat photos I found were from later stage of the war, when the squadron had moved over to Solomons, but I assume the tactical markings would be the same? The detail I am missing, is the tactical number of the aircraft(s) that Cecil Harris would've personally flown during Operation Torch. If I had the number available, rendering one of his early mounts should be possible.

If you have any information or photos of Harris' a/c, please let me know.

B Barrett , thanks, but I am aware of the fact that carrier aviators rarely had the luxury of flying specific or designated a/c.

I am looking for information of any a/c Harris flew during Operation Torch - at the end of the day, since all VGF-27 a/c were standard, all I would need is confirmed tactical number(s) of any a/c Harris flew. This would allow me to recreate a nice scale model.

Thank you fubar57 - very interesting to read. Unfortunately the USS Suwannee war diary does not list any tactical numbers, just the number and types of a/c launched.

But ... and this is where a HUGE thank you is in order; you did provide me with a valid link to the archives and doing some further digging I was able to find VGF-27 War Diary. And there we have each sortie listed, with pilots and also their aircraft (w/ numbers) listed. On 8th and 9th November, on each sortie C.E Harris flew, he was flying F4F-4 Wildcat with tactical number 27-GF-2.

With this information, I should have pretty solid plan for Harris' "personal" a/c!
