About the Supermarine machines, IIRC - the Spiteful was flown in prototype form during wartime - making 408mph @ S-L, on test.

This chart shows an early series Tempest Mk V (long-cannon, fishplates, wing-spar bumps - all cost speed) to be capable of 640.5 km/h,
at S-L, in 1944 - on a boost level - that was surpassed by later more highly developed Sabre powered Tempests.

(There is a Mk VI* tested on +17.25 lb, doing - 673 km/h @ S-L - graphed, in a 'Flight' article on annular radiators, somewhere in this forum)

*Annotated as a 'Standard Mk VI', to distinguish it from the annular nose-jobs)

Some knowledgeable comments here (as expected!) especially regarding fuel and airframe configurations.
AS WE ALL KNOW (!!) factory figures can be um suspect. The most reliable data are from independent evaluations such as Wright Field, Pax River, Boscombe Down, etc.

Well, it was incumbent on service test pilots not to buy the company bullshit - & duly establish/certify the performance parametrics their
combat flier peers were going to 'put their lives on the line' - with. (Plus provide evidence - if contract undertakings were not being met).
