Aerodynamically, the P-40 wasn't that bad; its aerodynamics were probably as good as or better than the Bf109 (the Bf109 had, from some reports, a zero lift drag coefficient of about 0.029. That's about a third greater than the P-47 or F4U and 70% greater than that of the P-51). It was, however, larger and heavier without the P-51s markedly better aerodynamics or the F4U's and P-47's markedly better power.
