Could they have been prepared so good as to prevent the invasion or to change the outcome...
In my opinion, most probably, they could not. Size of the economy and population, no real military ally, no serious foreign aid. A determined enemy who could afford a war of attrition, have been immune to trade sanctions and did not have anti-war opposition at home.
