I got to know Gabby somewhat when I was secretary of the aces assn beginning early 80s. He was a junior officer in Hawaii in late 41. He always said "The (plural J-word thank you SO much autofill) ruined the best deal I ever had. Unless you had the duty, sometimes you'd fly in the morning and take the afternoon off for swimming, surfing or fishing. Or girl chasing." (That's where he met Kay.)

Gabby got airborne in a P36 too late to intercept any Jraiders.
