GB-40 1/48 Vickers Wellington Mk. III - Heavy Hitters III

Just for interest, the pic below shows the last production Wellington overflying the Vickers works at Squires Gate, Blackpool (now Blackpool Airport).
The hangars are still there (airfield side at right in pic, main road passing airfield at left, out of shot), but ate now used as industrial units.

What interesting information my dear Terry, there is so much to know about the aircrafts and the most stimulating is that there will always be someone who has something timely to contribute.
It is a very good photo, the latter. I like it a lot and I admire so many places that are shown during wartime, what has happened to them nowadays and so many more that still remain prtactively intact.

On the other hand, the detailed work that Andy is accomplishing is very convincing and inspiring.

I did get the parts separated but managed to make a small scratch on a clear panel. I was hoping to avoid that as Trumpeter's glass parts are crystal clear and I'm hesitant to polish the scratch out. Anyway, I resprayed all of the turret interior Tamiya X-11 which turned out to be a bit too bright for my liking so I sprayed a dusting of Rubber Black over it. The only part that I made Grey/Green was the seat as it's not obvious to me what, if any parts would have been this colour. I figured the seat was separable so could be a different colour.



The rear turret is a 4 gun unit so is of different construction. Assembly of the tub has started and the paint was applied similar to the front turret



The mounts which you see loose above just won't do as the spent ammo chutes look like they were made of formed concrete. I therefore cut the sides of and replaced them with thin styrene sheet. Below you can see the difference.



Once again the turret innards are a bit sparse and the very prominent ammo belts which one can see through the rear glazing are non-existent. I will therefore have ore detailing work ahead of me here. As I'll be at the museum tomorrow. I'll poke my head into the Lancaster and take some detail pics of its turret since it's identical to the one I want to model. I can post pics if anyone is interested.

Good work Andy. The turret structure still looks rather dark to me, in the photos, if it's going to be the early colour using Cockpit Grey Green.
Found another combination, on an early Lanc, which appears to be a mix of metal and grey green, as shown below. (IWM, in Public Domain)
And yes, some detail shots inside the rear turret would be welcome. I have some I took looking straight aft, but pics showing the internal sides and the seat would be useful.


 
Terry, my intent was to leave them the bare metallic colour and not grey/green. Isn't that what you meant?

As for the Lancaster turret, I did take some pics and can send them to you Terry. However, the one I wanted is incomplete but there is a working turret that is a later FN-121 and not applicable to my model. I'll send everything I have once I get a chance to sort and edit.
 
Yep, the bare metal is fine, but in the photos of your turret it appears to be rather dark, like gunmetal.
The pics of the real turret appear to be the 'Loch Ness' Wellington, which I hope to see next month. This was an earlier Mark, with the two-gun rear turret, but shows well the colour of the bare metal.
No rush for the turret pics Andy, and I have some external shots of a complete (Lanc) rar turret on a 'jig' at DX if you need them.

I like how it contrasts the color of the seat in the front turret.
Those future photos of the details and entrails of the real turrets will be very helpful as a visual reference.

Thanks guys. Terry, yes those are pics of the Loch Ness Wellington and yes the rear turret reflects that it is an early version of the Wimpy. I was positing the pics for the colour reference.

I think the darkness of my bare metal colour is partly due to lighting as photographing a bright object, in this case with my cell phone, comes with an inherent adjustment of exposure. I did initially have a very light silvery colour applied (first time I used the Tamiya metallic colour) and it was far to light for my liking so I dusted the colour with a very thin mix of flat black and am happy with how it look now, pics not withstanding.

Guys, I think that I will create a separate thread in the technical section displaying the turret pictures I took since there seems to be some general interest so have a look out there.
 
Understood Andy. I had another look after replying to the post with the pics, and I can now see that lighting has affected the tones.

It will take me a while Terry as I need to sort between the 2 turrets and also resize the shots. I also photographed many pages of the manual.
