General John K. Herr was the last Chief of Calvary of the U.S. Army and was "retired" in 1942. He fought tooth and nail to keep the cavalry as a fighting branch of the U.S. Army in the late thirties and until 1942, when horsed cavalry was disbanded as an army branch. It was said that he hated the smell of gasoline. (I guess horse manure was more his thing.) He died in March 1955 and the following was published in April 1956, in Mechanix Illustrated. It's completely absurd. (I still am not sure where exactly the engine sits in the thing but it must be one potent little mother.) The "floats" are hilarious. They wouldn't have enough buoyancy to float a chubby pilot much less this contraption. Seeking out all the things wrong with this is a good intellectual exercise. It's almost funny.

Considering when it was published, I'm thinking it could be an "April Fools" joke of some kind.

Update: Since the fuel pump is near the rotors, that means the pods on the end of the blades are little jet engines.

There was a passenger grab rail. Why would you have a passenger on one of those things?
Pizza delivery.

That whirly-thingie reminds me of James Bond's armed gyrocopter.
