As part of the FAA type design approval, the manufacturer is required to demonstrate an ability to survive a lightning strike such that it will not prevent the aircraft from continued safe flight and landing. Having said that, that does not mean that the avionics in their entirety must survive or only suffer a momentary interruption. But for those avionics deemed critical, such as flight controls and engine controls, they must survive. In other words, you can lose all comm capability if you can demonstrate that the likelihood of being prevented from continued safe flight and landing is extremely improbable.

Demonstration/validation of this ability is subject to much consternation between industry and regulators.
