Depends on what is a "successful fighter"The R-2000 is an awfully small engine for a successful fighter in 1943.
What matters is the available power at the desired altitude and here the R-2000 is in trouble.
R-2000 without modifications is good for 1100hp at 16,000ft.
Ki-44 engine was good for 1320hp at 17,225ft
But the P-40N's had 1125hp at about 15,000ft.
P-40L (Packard) had 1120hp at 18,500ft.
Soviet M-82FN in a Lag-5 was good for 1450hp at 15,255ft
Even the Ki-43 IIs Ha-115 was good for 980hp at 19,685ft
R-1830 in the F4F-4 was good for 1020hp at 18,900ft but now you have to not only add the second stage but the intercooler/s.
Now we have to ask if the F4F-4 would be a "successful fighter" in the 2nd half of 1943
