    Considering many in flight training were barely 18 I'd say it was appropriate for the majority.

    Very cool. A lot of older military manuals were written for 6th grade reading levels, some even lower. Keep in mind that a lot of the guys who fought in WWII were children of the depression, so schooling may not have been a big priority for them.
