I have an aircraft compass and would like to know more about its origins if I can. My grandfather was engaged in aircraft recovery efforts during the war and this is one of the parts from aircraft they recovered, repaired and tested.

It is the Imperial Japanese Army Type 96 Compass 1937 made by the Yokogawa Aviation Instrument. The compass is damaged. There is a lack of a kind of a "door" with a magnifying lens. The remnants of its hinge can be still noticed on the right in the first pic. Not sure the aircraft type it could be used with.

BTW ... the device serial in your two pics is reversed but is shown correctly in your last image above. It is R60998. See the bottom shot of the another data plate ...
