Folks, has any of you encountered an explanation on why Junkers adopted the liquid cooled heat exchanger for Jumo 213 oil cooling? Seems to be the only series produced engine with this feature as though the P-51H used the same, it was more of an airframe related modification.

keep it simple. they used one radiator and the coolant went through the oil heat exchanger then engine cylinder blocks and back to radiator. Oil temps ran 100C + but the engine oil pump and bearing clearences were built for the higher oil temps.
the P-51 H has 2 cores in the radiator, one for the engine and a smaller section (in front) for the intercooler and the oil heat exchanger. we ran that system on Dago Red in '82 through '85. mn

Thanks! I was also wondering that since high oil pressure during starting in very low temperatures was known to cause ruptured oil radiators this method was seen as a way to avoid that...

BTW, Rolls-Royce considered it perhaps a bit unwise to use aftercooler liquid to cool the oil as if the aftercooling radiator was punctured, the engine could still work at reduced powers but if the main cooling system was shot out it would fail sooner or later anyway.
