Last chance to see the SS United States...

I have lived in Southern New Jersey across from Philadelphia for over 60 years as Marcel can attest to. I used to go to IKEA and order some lunch or breakfast and gaze on the United States from the big windows. Now I have moved to Florida and that big ole rust bucket is following me down! But that is not the biggest disappointment. It's that I missed a chance to meet up with Capt. Vick!!! Damn!

I was fortunate to sail on Her maiden voyage westward from Europe in 1951 with my mother. I was 10 years young. She had already set the record eastbound earlier and was now setting the westbound record. Believe me it was quite a fast ride for such a large vessel. It was a constant windy walk on deck due to the haul ass run west. I'll never forget the welcome when we arrived in New York. At 83 I wish Her Bon Voyage and thanks for the ride.

It's a shame that no billionaire has the stones to step in and see her preserved. Future generations will wonder why we kept her around for so long, just to sink her. How short sited. SMH

Thanks for so many views of this ship. I had known of it but had never seen a picture. Sad, but glad to know her fate, something useful. I remember when the news of the aircraft carrier Oriskany being used for this purpose came out and wondered if my ex-husband had seen the news. That was "his" ship. That sinking was the 1st time I was aware of this use for old ships. I hope it works so in a way the ship continues to carry life.

If you go to Google Maps and Street View, you can still see her docked.

You guys lived so close to each other

I'm glad I've been able to visit you both, even if it's 6000 bloody km away.
