Developed by Michigan-based startup Velo X Aerospace, the Velocitor X-1 is now accepting $5,000 refundable deposits toward an initial production run of 100 aircraft. Those first examples are slated to enter production in the first quarter of 2027, with a target price of $156,000 per aircraft.
Eight electric motor-propeller modules are mounted coaxially at the ends of four arms, enabling vertical takeoff and landing, stationary hovering, and controlled transitions into forward flight. In cruise, Velo X claims a top speed of 70 mph (112 km/h). Power comes from a battery pack that requires approximately six hours to recharge, delivering up to one hour of flight time plus a 15-minute reserve.
The aircraft blends pilot input with a high level of automation, with the goal of dramatically lowering the learning curve. Velo X describes the experience as intuitive rather than technical, suggesting that anyone comfortable operating recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles, motorcycles, or side-by-side UTVs should be able to adapt quickly. Unlike traditional aircraft—or even hobby drones—the pilot doesn't need to manage orientation from the outside. You're seated in the cockpit, flying from a natural, first-person perspective.
Safety has clearly been a major focus of the design. The Velocitor X-1 incorporates a LiDAR-based LOWAS (LiDAR Obstacle Warning and Avoidance System) to help detect and steer clear of hazards such as trees, poles, and power lines. Its distributed electric propulsion system is designed with redundancy in mind, using multiple motors, controllers, and batteries so that no single failure point leads to loss of control.
In the event of a catastrophic failure, the aircraft is also equipped with a ballistic parachute system that can deploy from altitudes as low as 50 feet (15 meters). Additional protection comes from an "ultra-strong" composite seat and a four-point harness intended to reduce injury during hard landings.
