Hi can anyone tell me if the attached photo looks like a genuine Merlin head off a mosquito?
Thanks in advance

The Mosquito ran many different Merlin types throughout its career but so did Spitfires, Mustangs and the various other aircraft that used that engine. It's not possible to just look at a small piece like that and say "Oh yeah, that's a Mossie Merlin alright". The claim needs to be backed up by some kind of paperwork confirming the artifact's provenance otherwise it's a guess at best.

Well I originally made the piece and the merlin was from a Halifax that crashed in Holland.

I chemically etched the plate with Rolls Royce and the RR/U/260 number on the rear is our stores code.
We made this very early on - about 15 years ago and I think this one was sold at Duxford Flying Legends.

Hello,
Just spotted this discussion and I have found it extremely helpful - I have recently purchased this item from Parade Antiques and I have spent quite a bit of time trying to chase down exactly where this cylinder head originally came from. From looking at the etched numbers on the valves, I came to the conclusion that this head is from a Packard Merlin engine. This did not tie up with the Mosquito description, so it left me a little stumped. Now, thanks to your information, I feel a lot happier. However, I would be very grateful, if you could tell me anything you know about the Halifax crash - date - aircraft number - location etc. I am trying to do justice to this wonderful piece of history.
Hope you can help me out.
Many thanks.
