Hello there,
I found a discussion about the 8th AAF Mission 760 on Dec. 24 1944, but can't find it anymore. Maybe someone could help me here.
I live in Bad Hersfeld, Germany between Fulda and Kassel. Not far from here is the crash site of a German Fw 190 of the 6/301JG that was shot down on the 24th of Dec. 1944 by P51s. A small memorial with parts of the engine has been errected on the site (see Fliegerdenkmal Rapoldshausen). According to German lists, at least 26 German fighters were downed of the 24th of Dec. 1944. Many of them crashing around the Bad Hersfeld, Eschwege area.
Does anyone have any idea what targets were being bombed in this area and which Bombardment Groups/ Fighter Groups of the AAF were operating over these areas?
Also near Bad Hersfeld is another memorial on the crash site of the ill-fated lead plane of the 445 th Bombardment Group who broke out of the main formation of Bombers heading towards Kassel on the 27th of Sept 1944 (Kassel Raid) and were mauled by over 100 German fightes while trying to return from their Raid over Göttingen (secondary target). Over 30 of the 39 Planes of the group were shot down, others crashed landed in France and Belgium. I think only 1 plane made it back to it's base in England.
Dotting the German Country side, are many such memorials to both German and Allied pilots that gave their lives in a futile war.
Thanks
