MYSTERY P-40

I recall a story years ago in an aviation magazine though I can't recall which one. It involves an interception of what turned out to be a bullet riddled P-40 flying towards friendly airspace from an unknown location. I remember the article mentioned that the P-40 seemed to have landing gear skids made out of wood or bamboo but it isn't mentioned here....
