The NASM building on the Washington DC mall has recently been undergoing a 'revitalization' since opening in 1976. Last night there was a preview for NASM volunteers to see some of the re-done galleries and my wife and I attended. Attached are a few images from the WWII gallery. Not sure yet about the other aircraft that used to be on display and are not there now: ( Spitfire, Macchi 202, Zero, Me262 ). Now the P-51, Bf109, and Il2 kind of meet nose to nose. The Bf109 is painted in the markings when it was defected by the French pilot Rene Darbois. The museum has used some new type of glass for the display cases. There is minimal or no glare. The Mk108, Little Boy and the Wright 1820 are in such cases, and clear as ever.
