Need help identifying aircraft please. Possibly WW1?

Hi,
I am with the South Australian Aviation Museum History Group and we are trying to identify the aviator in the image. Can anyone identify the aircraft please? Number on the aircraft appears to be M? 4406

I just noticed this picture of the Martinsyde, behind it is Albatros D V G'56, captured at Poperinghe in 1917. It was destroyed when its pilot lost consciousness whilst demonstrating it over the Firth of Forth in December 1917. This picture shows it at St Omer, France before it went to the UK.
