Hello everyone. I've been a sporadic lurker on this site for quite some time. What prompted me to finally make an account is that I've become involved in doing research for a Hearts of Iron IV mod called Ultra. The main objective of Ultra is to provide a more historical industry model, but the mod team also intends to replace the base game's generic air units with unique more historically accurate ones.

Basically what I'm hoping is to be allowed to do is make a thread where I can ask questions about some of the more difficult to find pieces of information I need for various aircraft models in the hope that someone has a solid source that covers them. For instance I'm wondering if anyone has any books about the SM.79 that might be able clear up some of the contradictory information I've found about some of the evolved variants of that aircraft. I realize that in a lot of cases people can't post their sources online directly but I'm hoping it would at least be possible for them to share the relevant pieces of information.

Welcome to the forum. Recovering from haying the back 40 for the first time at the moment but I have a few books on the SM.79

Thanks for the welcome Fubar! I should probably clarify some things like where the mods think it would be best for me to post a request thread (assuming they're okay with me making one) before I get too into actual aircraft discussion.

That being said, one of the first things I'm hoping to verify about the SM.79 is actually just what the major production models/variants were. My Encyclopedia of World Aircraft and a lot of the online sources I've found online indicate that there were -II and -III variants, but I'm wondering if those were actual Italian designations as other Italian aircraft seem to use variant designations such as M, bis, and ter). There's also disagreement about the features of the variants such as what engines they were typically fitted with and whether some of the torpedo bombers were specialist models or whether conventional and torpedo bomber units initially used more or less the same aircraft.

Welcome aboard!
I don't see why there would be an issue with the mods, by asking questions for modelling/profile accuracy.
We used to have a very active gaming section where we were always trying to get the most accurate details, both in the aircraft's profile and with historical mission recreation.

Hi and welcome, if you're unsure about some of your posts, just ask a one of the moderators. Unlike what people say, we're quite a friendly bunch of people :)

Our main problem is how to get a good balance between sharing information and protecting copy rights. After all, the goal of this forum is exactly what you ask: research and sharing information. So we'll look at it case by case and we're still developing our policy regarding copy rights.

Welcome to the site.

A quick answer to your question and doubt ... the _II and -III don't mean the variant but the series of the SM.79. There were three basic ones -I, -II and -III. The first series was assembling from 1936 to 1940. The second one from 1940 to 1943 and the third one from 1943 to 1944. All series were powered by different types of an engine. But this is for your next thread rather than for welcoming here.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Marcel Marcel I think the first thing I want to clarify is just where I should post my topic. At first glance one of the gaming sub forums would seem appropriate, but they're not very active and are geared more towards flight sims then strategy games. Then I thought maybe one of the technical sub forums although much of the discussion there seems to be about controls and maintenance rather then performance specifications. I'm actually wondering if it would be acceptable for me to post something in just the general "aviation" sub forum as that seems like the best way to cast a broad net.

If you want to get some info on a plane you should post in the Aviation/Aircraft Request -- Aircraft Requests

Indeed. The gaming forums is really for the games itself, so announcements or reviews of new versions etc., things that are only interesting if you play that game. Your question is about real life info about a specific aircraft. That you ultimately want to use that knowledge in a game is of no consequence.
