I remember my Grandad telling me that when they went over the top in the Great war half the blokes would scream "Remember Nurse Cavell!" - The other half would scream "Remember Captain Fryatt!" - The Germans didn't get much mercy. - "Patriotism is not enough".

Regardless of its legality -- and it appears that it was legal according to the international standards of the time -- it was probably not the smartest action for the German authorities to have taken.

They re-released the 1939 Film about Cavell on DVD in 2016
