You know, I recall an article in Air Progress back in the early 1970's in which they suggested some fun "What Ifs." One was a giant J-3 Cub powered by a 600 HP R-1340 and with room for a dozen or so passengers. Another was a scaled down B-17. They had hoped to power it with four Lawrence radials, which was a small engine used as an APU on B-29's, but they figured out that would not work, not enough power. So they suggested four VW flat fours, which is pretty close to what is in that one.
 
Shorts built a 1/2 scale Stirling to test the aerodynamics. It was designated the S.31 and was powered by 4 100hp Pobjoy Niagara radials.
