I have the book on it. Hard to believe they even tried, considering how deep it was under the ice and how badly damaged it was. But I guess you can fix anything. The restoration of that P-51B they found in a lake in Florida was incredible, too.
The B-17 and the other P-38's are still there. One P-38 was wrecked on landing.
You know, they did not hook up the turbos or intercoolers in the wing leading edge. They just hooked the carb intake to those air scoops along the sides of the booms beneath the wings. That arrangement gives them no carb heat, which you normally do not need with a turbo. I don't know if they ever did anything about that as a potential problem. Maybe the supercharger in the V-1710 is a proof against carb icing.
