I only recently became aware of the fact of Thunderbolts using Malcolm Hoods. Does anyone know how common this was?

Good pic. I've seen the Malcolm Hood on very few P-47s but I've never seen this version before (grabbed from another site)

That looks "liberated" from something else a cut to fit.

My first thought would be a homemade "camera bubble," so the pilot could take photos from the cockpit. The fuselage code is from the 387th Fighter Squadron, 365th Fighter Group, 9th AF. The 365th only flew a few fighter missions before they were trained and utilized as a ground attack unit on 8 March 1944. After that, they flew mostly ground attack missions. Perhaps this is one of the A/C they sent over either before or after their bombing missions, to get photos of the targets.

Not from a Lanc - different shape, the Lanc's being tear-drop shaped.
I have the pic in one of my books, and, from memory, it was a side panel from a B-24 cockpit window, modified to fit in the field. The shape seems to match a B-24 blister.

Resp:
It makes me think this pilot flew above the action and would be able to observe hits as well as misses. He could therefore redirect attacks to a target that wasn't hit/destroyed. If that Photo could only talk. Gotta give credit for on-site modifications by the ground crews. Neat. Photo!
Claes Sunden has an aircraft print of a P-47 with a Malcolm style hood fitted, which is based on actual photos of a belly landed ETO Thunderbolt.
