  • In my day, aircraft assignments were first come first serve for the whole class. I was 13th out of 52 but we only got 5 fighters, one an F-100! SAC always got the bottom third and then started to complain so I heard that they changed and only the top ten percent got their choice. Everyone was afraid of SAC.
On my last flight in the T-38, my flap switch failed and I could not get the flaps down. Finally after a few patterns to reduce fuel and playing with the switch, I got the flaps to work. I was kinda disappointed. It would have been cool to make my final landing in the T-38 a no flap. I"m sure my instructor in mobile was relieved!
I married an Enid girl (coming up to a 50th anniversary in May) so we visit quite often. Sorry to say but Elmers is no longer open. Several times I have went down the parallel road to 17R to watch the T-38s land. I'm kinda awed when I think that I could be in the cockpit of that very same aircraft 50 years ago!
Biff, where and what UPT class were you in? Did they have split paths then? I was in Vance class 71-03.

    Dave(?),
I too went to Enid by the sea, class 89-12. I was at the end of the FAR / TTB track (Fighter, Attack, Recce or Tanker Transport Bomber qualified. There were new classes every 3 weeks of about 25-30 kids each. Still Tweets and Talons although the T-1 was introduced with in a couple of years from when I graduated. Loved to go to Elmers Real Pitt BBQ, which was on the East side of town near the RR tracks.

The VFR entry point for 17R (T-38s) was 7 section lines North of Owen K. Garriot (the major East West paved road in Enid)...
