Gunman F2F-1 Fighter (Bu# 9672) of VF-5, on the ground, on the 8th of September 1938.

Flight deck scene on USSYorktown CV-5, during a lull in air operations while participating in Fleet Problem XX,
February 1939. Planes are Grumman F2F-1 fighters, of Fighting Squadron Five (VF-5). That in the center, coded 5-F-2,
is Bureau # 9664. Note gun cameras mounted atop the planes' upper wings; signal flags flying; details of the ship's island;
and large Y painted on her stack for identification purposes.

U.S. Navy Ensign Leif Larsen and rear gunner Radioman John F. Gardener of scouting squadron VS-5
(temporarily redesignated VB-5) in their Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5)
during the Battle of Midway, in the late morning of 4 June 1942. This plane was not one of ten "VS"-5 planes launched
on a scouting mission shortly before noon on 4 June. Another of the squadron's SBDs succeeded in locating the
Japanese carrier Hiryu, the only Japanese aircraft carrier of the Midway striking force that was still operational.
The next plane, at right, is "VS"-5's number 4, which did fly the scouting mission, piloted by Lieutenant John Nielsen.

Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless scout bombers preparing to take off, during operations in the Coral Sea, 18 April 1942.
The first plane is from Scouting Squadron Five (VS-5). Note that it has no insignia painted under its port wing, and that
the insignia below its starboard wing is much smaller than that on the next SBD. Man standing at left, just beyond the
first plane's wingtip, is Boatswain Chester E. Briggs, Jr.
