In the 4th & 5th grades in Tokyo we had classes in basic Japanese. I still remember the teacher trying to explain the difference in pronouncing Hanna and Hanna. (sp?) They sounded the same to us.

I think he was trying to give us a subtle difference in pronounciation between hana= flower and hana= nose.

As humorous as this might be, I would expect there to be far more success with these folks and English than I have ever had speaking Japanese.
