Every base had to have some fighter defenses, however unlikely they would be needed. That included places such HI, the Canal Zone, and Ascension Island. Of course, both the Germans and the IJN did try air attacks on the Panama Canal but never brought them off. The German attack in 1941 was foiled and its JU-52 aircraft impressed into USAAF service and the IJN attack in 1945 was cancelled and the aircraft tossed overboard when word came of the airstrike on Hiroshima. The second attack on Pearl Harbor was carried out some time after 7 Dec 1941 by Mavis seaplanes at night. I guess that it would have been too embarrassing for an attack to occur and there be no interceptors.

Looks like, that, doesn't it? Seems to have been hit in the wheel which led to the messy landing. Remarkable Thing is, Look At The Prop! Seemingly untouched,
