Dec. 7, 1941, 22 years old Cornelia Fort became the 1st American woman pilot in a combat zone while flying over Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. While 2 other civilian planes were shot out of the sky, she made it thru' the strafing & landed her plane. She was among the first pilots recruited for the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron. In March 1943, she was killed by a midair collision while on a ferrying mission to Dallas.

I have started reading the book "Turning the Tide" about the USAAF in North Africa. One thing that always interested me were the launch of the P-40F's of the 67th and 33rd Fighter Groups from aircraft carriers. I looked for some additional pictures on the internet and found this, a P-40F of the 33rd FG launching from the USS Chenango escort carrier. This is an often used photo but the quality of this version of it is excellent. Note the P-40 at the far right and also the one at the lower left with the engines running. There was almost no deck available; they were catapulted off.

Given the "chocks" and massive tail stand and tail diagonal bracing am I right in guessing they will run the engine to check the synchronising system?

I believe so as engine vibration affected gun harmonics

Lancaster III ND759, one of fourteen aircraft whose mission was to attack factories in Friedrichshafen on 27th / 28th April 1944.
The Lancaster ditched on Lake Constance, Switzerland. It was to stay there until 1954 when it was recovered. It was scrapped
a year later.

No. 332 Squadron Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX BS540 shot down by Luftwaffe ace Rüdiger von Kirchmayr in a Fw 190 over Zeeland on May 2nd 1943

No. 332 Squadron of the Royal Air Force was formed at RAF Catterick in the North Riding of Yorkshire on 16 January 1942, as a Supermarine Spitfire-equipped fighter squadron manned by Norwegians.

Spitfire pilot Nils Jørgen Fuglesang survived the incident but would be executed less than a year later by the Gestapo for his participation in the "Great Escape" from Stalag Luft III in March 1944
