I didn't know that this instrument, which is used by painters (a wooden shaft ending in a fabric ball) to support their hand, could have military applications !

Interesting roundel location on the fuselage nose.

I know I've seen similar roundel placements on F4F and J2Fs. I don't recall any other planes but there probably are.

Cool pic! The B-18A entered service in 1938 and was still the USAAC's primary bomber at the end of 1941 (in terms of number in service, at least).

I don't think this info is correct. For sure this is not a photo from the 1920s. The headset and the goggles are there, yes, but what's that additional "thing" in front of the goggles? This is what I'm asking about.

I have found another shot of a such device ... and merged these two. IMHO these are the same goggles or just based on the same project. The caption found on the side with the link below say these are the night/day goggles. The one seen in the left pic seems to be of the "open" state for the level of the daylight or night light.

In the enlarged shot you may notice the inscription 2 1/2C. The light filter temperature? IMHO the device could be used for training pilots in flights with the limited light level. In other words for the blind flying.

For what it is worth as long as dating the picture is concerned, he is wearing a battle dress that the RAF adopted on december 1940 (RAF Suits, Blue Grey aircrews) with a widespread use after october 1943 for all including Officers, NCO's, ground personnel and Aircrewmen.

Yep .. I agree. And I'm sure that's the reason Yves has had the doubt about the date. However, I have paid more of my attention to the device focusing on his first question.
