Charles A. Wambier was born on 1921. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a Flight Officer in the
358th Fighter Squadron, 355th Fighter Group.

Wambier was Killed in Action on December 30, 1943 at around 1445 while piloting P-47D #42-75425 YF-U, lost near Reims
in combat with two Me 109s.

He is now buried in Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer, Departement du Calvados,
Basse-Normandie, France.

That could've been due to the amount of airfields built throughout the Pacific. It is a cool plane for sure.

I don't think it's Photoshop; rather, it looks like gouache or watercolor applied directly to the photograph.

It is a very old technique, which explains why the artist was so well-versed in the uniform colors and thier evolutions. He was a contemporary !

Yep, my father used to do that up to the early 70s on B & W pictures.
