Interesting that USN still hadn't painted out the red centers of the stars until after Coral Sea. USAAF started painting them out much earlier, at least in Australia.
Also this is one of the first F4F-4s to hit the fleet.

It does look like a cannelloni!
Probably concerned about a flame out, but flying a jet with the canopies open tends to reduce aerodynamic efficiency.

was withdrawn from the front line on 28 August 1940 after the loss of 11 aircraft (including L7026 PS-V and N1535 PS-A),
