I have often wondered at the more subtle color tones applied to many foreign aircraft as compared to the simpler OD/Gray/Blue/buck naked aluminum paint schemes used by US aircraft. I mean, colors like Sky Type S, black green, various shades of violet, etc. seem a bit odd.

But I suppose the odd color on this Ohka is due to its being a training aircraft. From Flight Journal article on what it was like to fly the Baka bomb. And was it really necessary too paint the national insignia on the thing? Afraid it might be mistaken for an American Baka bomb?

Apparently that was a good job to have as long as you weren't driving when they were doing the water landing tests (they used that particular car because the wood
helped it to stay afloat long enough for the driver to get out). Then again, that could be something someone just made up.

I saw it on the internet, so it must be true.

It is a real photo from the Consolidated-Vultee archive and it is not manipulated in a modern AI-way. I've seen similar test-trucks carrying even full size airplanes (small ones) mounted on them. Don't know the exact purpose of the tests though.

A friend of mine who lives in CA told me he heard that in order to test the airfoil shape of the Mustang's wing NAA mounted a test airfoil section atop a station wagon and drove it through the fog on the Pacific Coast Highway to observe the airflow.
