Just a guess here: Isn't it too dangerous for those ladies to stay in the working area, especially when a thin man in a crazy position tries to hold single-handedly a propeller, hanging on chains? I do believe this photo is staged and the propeller is stationary and not moving, but imagine the guy with the spectacles loosing balance....

He is there to stop the down blade from hitting the gantry as they move across the ground. Slung like that (which is normal) there will be a tendency to sway sideways because a small difference in ground level (eg 1mm) will cause a large difference in the top of the gantry position and make the load swing much further. It takes surprisingly little force to stop the swing.

That said - I would be very surprised if that was not staged.

Seeing this photo I always think: are these Hellcats partially hand painted? Huge touch-ups? The nat. insignia looks smaller than usual and the old one was probably overpainted. Don't know the exact story though.

You may be right.

I had always thought that the area had been quickly rubbed down then cleaned with lacquer thinners before the latest insignia either sprayed on, or, far more likely, applied using what was then officially called a decalorama. I might have that spelling wrong but the P-40 blueprints show national insignia decals existed at that time.

Your thought certainly has merit.
