Amusing to see the editing out of the Sanskrit svastika (su meaning "good" or "well" and asti meaning "to be"), translating to "conducive to well-being," "good fortune," or "luck" in this non-Nazi application. The symbol abounds in Indo Asian, Buddhist, and Navajo cultures meaning fortune and prosperity. Finnish culture abounds with uplifting symbolisms, words, sayings and lore ... one of the world's least aggressive societies.

Yes it was very popular symbol at the time...wonder why. How did Latvian AF adopt the symbol...and why Adolf in Germany for his party ?

A lot of cultures naturally gravitated toward variations of the cross as their identifying symbols, often with a religious tie, but also linked to the spread eagle human form. Note the wide variety of crosses and squares in nature, construction, art layout and architecture. Even the Polish symbol has swastika elements.
Himmler was obsessed with mysticism, and influenced Adolph in adopting favorable legends, lore and symbolism to create a legend for Nazism, ranging from Nordic to Oriental.
