Looking at the flash hider, odds are strong this could be a M16 (firts adopted by the USAF in 1964 without the bolt assist), not a M16A1.
That is the pilot with the M.16 and rear seat guy has the stick. One could actually fire from the smaller rear seat windows without danger of hitting the strut.

I've fired a M-16 a bunch, bad recoil isn't one of it's traits. About the only service rifle of it's era that had softer recoil might be the M1 Carbine.That recoil would be a bitch!
