If the Spey were chosen (at least in part) due to fuel efficiency, why the K became so short legged?
See that door door that opens on the side of the airplane? That is because the Spey is a turbofan and needs a whole lot more air than a turbojet. Imagine if they put TF-33 turbofans on a B-52 or KC-135 but insisted on keeping the same J-57 cowlings.
 
Martin got the contract to build the Canberra Copy, the B-57 rather than the B-51, and then proceeded to incorporate the XB-51's rotary bomb bay in the B-57 because ... just because, I guess.

Reportedly the XB-51 was rejected by the USAF because the CSAF or SECAF or someone did not like Mr. Martin's politics. After the B-57 Martin supposedly gave up on building airplanes, since it was obvious that they would never win a contract. They went into missiles with more success and built the Matador, Mace, Titan I, Titan II and space boosters, the Titan III, 34, and IV.

I have been in the building shown in the Mace launch. It is still there, but was only for test launches. Actual operational deployments of both the Mace and Matador was from trailers.
