In my castle....
Take away all the computer gizmos, gimmicks, gadgets and other whatchamacallit....
Put todays computer jockies in a car without the stuff and then bring all the old PROPER Aces from F-1 and FIA GT Championship back. Put all in one kind of car, no car different from the other, have them race each other without breakdowns (like if that is possible...), heck, let them go through a whole season....who'd win, who'd be the best driver of all time?

I personally think that Rally Drivers are the best drivers in the world!!! Sebastien Loeb is an incredible driver, he would have to rank up there with the best!!!

Fangio is also obviously incredibly skillful and courageous considering the car he was driving...very impressive.

I think this is a show of brilliant driving...I dont really know anything about this driver but his drive in this clips is incredible...fantastic viewing!

Great topic btw

Impossible task... wich car? what track? rain or dry?

Nuvolari, Fangio, Caracciola, Ascari, Hill, Stewart, were all real champions.
But Senna, Prost, Lauda, Fittipaldi, Andretti were champions too, as they are Shumacher and Hakkinen.

All of this people (and many more that is too long to remember) would go fast in any car, any tire, any circuit and any wheater.

But we will never know if Fangio or Nuvolari would be better than Shumi in driving an 'electronic' car or if Shumi would be more than a match for them in a Alfa 158 or Mercedes.

Same can be said for Loeb and the rally drivers: could Loeb be on par with Andruet, Kallstrom, Munari etc. driving a 1970 Alpine or Lancia Stratos? Or viceversa, would Ove Andersson drive better than Loeb a fully gizmoed 2007 WRC car with traction even on the spare tire?

Matter for (beautiful) endless evening discussion at the pub, but in my opinion no way to draw a objective conclusion...

good post! So many variables and you cant really compare between eras, however for the sake of opinion and fun...............

I'd like to think Eddie Richenbacher could compete... he was a terror on a motor cycle and in a Spad.

No less a daunting task than "Best ww2 fighter" or a dozen other similar threads. The quest is not for a conclusion... it's for the information that emerges!

Would have been an interesting night or nights down at the pub discussing this. I'm sure that quite a few beers would have been downed....

As comiso90 said: The quest is not for a conclusion... it's for the information that emerges!....

Also, how can you discuss all these drivers without somehow fall back to the cars that they were driving..may it rally, F1 or sports car racing?

Borzacchini, Campari and Nuvolari. Each a winner of the Mille Miglia.

1955: Stirling Moss in Ravenna is going to win the race...

"When I talk about the Mille Miglia, I feel quite moved, for it played such a big part in my life. I knew it as a driver, a team director and a constructor ... and was always an admirer of its champions. In fact, the Mille Miglia not only provided enormous technical advances during its three decades, it really did breed champions.

I was present at every one of the twenty-four Mille Miglias that were run and was numbed by the tragic accident in 1957 when the marchese de Portago was killed driving one of my cars, causing the race to be banned.

In my opinion, the Mille Miglia was an epoch-making event, which told a wonderful story. The Mille Miglia created our cars and the Italian automobile industry. The Mille Miglia permitted the birth of GT, or grand touring cars, which are now sold all over the world. The Mille Miglia proved that by racing over open roads for 1,000 miles, there were great technical lessons to be learned by the petrol and oil companies and by brake, clutch, transmission, electrical and lighting component manufacturers, fully justifying the old adage that motor racing improves the breed."
