Republic P-43 Lancer (s/n unknown) assigned to the 1st Pursuit Group at Langley Field, VA. A 2nd Bomb Group, 96th Bomb Squadron North American BT-9 (a/c Nð 79) is visible in the background. The pilot of the P-43 is posed standing next to the aircraft wearing his flight gear.View attachment 382072
Sorry to be picky, but that's a BT-14 peering between the wheels. The low hanging motor and triangular rudder are the giveaways.

Note the two "protrusions" aft of the fuselage strip. Anyone know what they are for? I can't remember ever seeing them before.

IIRC they're apertures for recce cameras. There's another rectangular camera window on the underside just forward of the fuselage stripe. I still haven't figured out how they maintained longitudinal stability with cameras so far aft.

Here's a RAAF P-43 after a mishap. These airframes were used in the PR role. Note the blanking plate on the rear fuselage in the same location as the fairings in the above pic.
