Jan the Spitfire isn't painted aluminium but it is of the NMF.Only the fabric skinned parts like the rudder were coated with the colour. The effect seen in the pic above is the result of removing the camouflage or being of the NMF for longer time. The duraluminium plate got the patina due to the aluminium oxidation in time. The process results in getting of the more matt tone and then going towards the grey tinge finally.

That's possible for the aircraft shown, but, post war, some aircraft were painted in "Aluminium", with a matt black "anti glare" panel on the top of the cowling.
Meteors, Vampires etc had a similar finish, before the introduction of "High Speed Silver".
