Does anyone know if it would've been possible for the 109 G, F, or K wing to internally hold an mg131? The size weight and dimensions of the 131 are almost exactly the same as the mg 17, which was able to fit 1,000 round belts into the 109 C wings. The 109 E infamously housed the mgff internally, albeit with some minor changes to the spar and a 60 round drum. To me it seems like a no brainer solution to the firepower/agility dynamic that the under-wing gun pods posed.

There was no problem to do it with the Bf 109 of any kind. The MG FFM was bulkier, with the drum, and it still fitted. With some changes, the Spanish managed to install the bigger Hispano cannon in the wing of some of their 109s made post war.

Much depends on what you want for the firepower to do. The MG 131s were okay against the Allied fighters, but barely usable against the bombers, from Il-2 upwards. Fitting the MG FFMs within the wing from the 109F onward would've added far more firepower, without a great drag and weight penalty.

I know that Galland modified his bf 109 F to have the mgff in the wings on top of the existing armament. Considering he was head of the fighter arm I'm surprised it didn't catch on. Good point about the 131s I thought they had much more high explosive fill. I'm curious how much they could have realistically extended the mgff ammo capacity.
