A late-great friend was an LSO on the Shangri-La early 60s. Late one night a nugget F4D aviator was having trouble getting aboard, beyond bingo range. Enough JP remained for one last pass. Wheels on the deck, hook skip, bolter...

The nugget lit the burner and pulled into the pure vertical. John said, "I'm here to tell you that a Ford with 50 lbs of fuel has a spectacular rate of climb!"

Recovered the pilot who, IIRC, got an OK for his last pass because the hook skip wasn't his fault.
