I hope this is the right place to ask this, apologies if not, i'm happy to re-create elsewhere.
I'm trying to find details about a few squadrons from the 12af, particularly:
86th Figher-bomber group (later 86th fighter group)
consisting of the 525th, 526th, and 527th Fighter (bomber) squadrons
and the 86th Bomber Squadron of the 47th bomber group.
Now I have various resources out there with some scant photo's and records, but what I don't have are any good records of the planes that were flown. i.e. their serials, numbers, and nicknames/art.
some more info is available for the 86th fighter group, but the bomber sqn I can only see very little.
For UK planes i'd go look in the national archives digital store or Rafcommands and pull all the flight diaries etc which list what plane flew with whom, when, where, and who picked their nose (bless the bureaucrats!) but for US units i'm not finding anything like this and I do wonder if it's a lack of record keeping or just that the "US war machine" didn't give two figs about the machines, they just pumped them out.
This feels more like hyperbole though as ultimately they cost money, never say never I suppose, it could just be that it's in a location I don't know about, and ultimately this is what i'm hoping.
So can anyone suggest links or places to find information such as the identity of planes used in a particular squadron?
Thank you!
Pete
