I hope this is the right place to ask this, apologies if not, i'm happy to re-create elsewhere.
I'm trying to find details about a few squadrons from the 12af, particularly:
86th Figher-bomber group (later 86th fighter group)
consisting of the 525th, 526th, and 527th Fighter (bomber) squadrons

and the 86th Bomber Squadron of the 47th bomber group.

Now I have various resources out there with some scant photo's and records, but what I don't have are any good records of the planes that were flown. i.e. their serials, numbers, and nicknames/art.
some more info is available for the 86th fighter group, but the bomber sqn I can only see very little.

For UK planes i'd go look in the national archives digital store or Rafcommands and pull all the flight diaries etc which list what plane flew with whom, when, where, and who picked their nose (bless the bureaucrats!) but for US units i'm not finding anything like this and I do wonder if it's a lack of record keeping or just that the "US war machine" didn't give two figs about the machines, they just pumped them out.
This feels more like hyperbole though as ultimately they cost money, never say never I suppose, it could just be that it's in a location I don't know about, and ultimately this is what i'm hoping.

So can anyone suggest links or places to find information such as the identity of planes used in a particular squadron?
Thank you!
Pete

When doing searches you must pay attention to the specific text format each web page uses, i.e. 86th FG, 86FG, 86 FG, etc..

You can go here and do a search for 86FBG, 86FG, 525FS, 526FS, and 527FS, compile the data and have a list of aircraft that were Lost or in Accidents.

or this 86th Fighter Group in WWII by Steve Luce (2008, Hardcover) for sale online | eBay

You can also do various searches here USASC-USAAS-USAAC-USAAF-USAF Military Aircraft Serial Numbers--1908 to Present to locate S/N's assigned to a Unit by pulling up each page and using the "Ctrl F" feature of your computer.

You will probably need the individual squadron records.
86FG, 525, 526, 527 sqn, Algeria May 1943, Sicily July 1943, Italy Oct 1943, France Feb 1945
47 BG, 86 sqn, Morocco Feb 1943, Sicily Aug 1943, Italy Sep 1943,

Air Force History Index AFHRA search
https://www.afhra.af.mil/Portals/16/documents/home/AFHRA_EDRForm.pdf AFHRA Order, 5 requests every 30 days, up to 120 days to wait for delivery

IRISREF is the microfilm reel the document is on, search strings like "0525/FIGHTER", "group/0086/Fighter", "squadron/0086" etc. restrict dates from 1940 to 1946 in advanced search, gives reel numbers like

Fighter Squadrons A0822, A0823
Fighter Group B0169A, B0170
Bomb squadron A0569
Bomb group B0141, B0141A

The records often use abbreviated serials so you do need lists of the full serials, Joe Baugher's site is a good way to at least start a list of aircraft in the groups. There are the individual aircraft cards but you need to know the abbreviations and many have entry sent overseas data A followed by lost on date B. Going the other way the units were directly under XII Tactical Air Command, then under 87 Fighter Wing XII TAC.

Whle Baugher is better than nothing, his lists are riddled with errors. About 14 and again 10 years ago I sent him my 400+ serial numbr/sq code/pilots list along with about 40 corrections to 355th, SF xp and 2nd SF Mstangs and Thunderbolts - he acknowledged receipt but never changed on line item.

That said, IO you are 'hosed' - as there are only two consistent sources for serial numbers and squadron codes. One is the FG engineering (or Sq Engineering) records. The second is the Tower Flight log - which normally doesn't have serial number but always has pilot/aircraft and squadron code for all ships taking off and returning - or failed to return.

Very few exist today.
