Hello, I believe we have a couple of veterans here, so if you don't mind, I want to ask something:

A friend of mine wants to go back to college for a master's degree, using his GI Bill. Anything he should be aware of or pitfalls to look out? He left the navy about 20 years ago I think, just wondering if maybe something has changed that might come as a rude surprise to him.

To be perfectly frank, I am currently also a bit concerned about the responsible administration not being up to simply green-lighting it.

Thanks and regards,

Acheron

I used my Vietnam Era GI Bill to get an AAS at a community college. That was 35 years ago.
I doubt he will have any problems with this administration.
The prior could have been a problem.
The college should have a military advisor. Check with other students that are vets to see if they are having any issues.
Good luck and tell him thanks for his service!

If his last period of active service was before January 1 2013, he had 15 years to use his benefit.
If his last stint of AD ended after January 1 2013, there is no expiration on when he can use it.

I enlisted in Mar 1989, separated in 1993, and I had ten years to burn that fuel before cutoff. That was Montgomery GI Bill. Got me my AA. I was USAF, we got $10,800 credit for $1200 paid in. Shitty deal compared to other branches.

I don't know how it works nowadays. Your buddy definitely needs to talk to his veteran advisor to get current info.
