What If You Only Had Two Aircraft To Fight WWII Remix

Let's try it a bit differently this time:

1. Pick your side, Allies, Germany, or Japan;

2. Pick your two aircraft for each of the time periods:
1939 to 1941 Aircraft first flight date no later than June 1 1938
1941 to 1943 Aircraft first flight date no later than June 1 1940
1943 to 1945 Aircraft first flight date no later than June 1 1942

3. These two types must perform all combat aviation tasks from day fighter to carrier fighter to torpedo bomber to night fighter to tactical and strategic bombing to cargo transport to paratrooper drops, etc.

4. The aircraft you pick may be of any nationality. For example, you could pick a Japanese fighter and a British bomber if you wanted to; no relation to the side you're playing.

5. Tell us why you picked the aircraft you picked.

6. Have fun!

I choose the Allies side.
My 1939-1941 picks:
Supermarine Spitfire
B-17
My 1941-1943 picks:
B-24
F4U
My 1943-1945 picks:
B-24
P-51

In 1941, can we use a type that was manufactured in 1942? Can we use the version from 1944 in 1943?

You can't "jump forward in time" to grab a plane!

However, if you pick a plane that flew early the time slot, you do get to use the advanced models as they came online.
So, if you picked the P-38 for the 41-43 slot, you get to use the P-38D & E models in 41, and upgrade to the F, G, & H in 42 and 43 is included.

I choose the Allies side.
My 1939-1941 picks:
Messerschmitt Bf 109
Vickers Wellington

My 1941-1943 picks:
Focker Wulf FW 190
Avro Lancaster

My 1943-1945 picks:
Hawker Fury.
Boeing B29

Could you provide escort for the Lancasters with the FW-190? Interesting picks.
The B-29's first flight was September 1942, too late for the 1943-45 time slot.
The Hawker Fury/Sea Fury first flew on September 1 of 1944.

I didn't spot the "flown by June 42" part.

I will change my 43 to 45 picks
Hawker Tempest
Avro Lancaster
The Lancaster is still the best bomber in 1945 if you discount the best bomber of WWII the B29. None of the fighters I have chosen need to be escorting bombers I am British therefore long range bombing takes place at night.

We're going by first flight date, which was 29 May 1940 for the F4U.

This is the kicker - there is no F4U service-worthy version that I can pick in 1941.

But to stop with the negatives:
1939 to the Operation Barbarossa: Spitfire I, then III (if not, then V); B-17
Operation Barbarossa to fall of Italy: Spitfire III, then VIII; B-17
Fall of Italy to bombing of Nagasaki: P-47D, then -N; B-24

I'll just go AAF as that's my bag.

1939 to 1941 P-40 and B-17
1941 to 1943
P-51A/A-36 and B-17
1943 to 1945
P-51B/C/D/H et. al. and B-29

Shocking choices for me I know...

The P-40 first flight was October 1938, too late for the 39-40 time frame.
You could use the P-36 or P-39. Or use a USN plane.
The P-51 first flight was October 1940, too late for the 41-43 time frame. You could use the P-38 if you want to discard all carrier operations, or the P-40 or P-43.

Have to figure a line and draw it, so first flight is it. F4U first flight was 29 May 1940.

You don't have to designate the model numbers of your aircraft. That's too fine a line. Just "Spitfire" is good enough.
You're happy with the P-47 as your carrier aircraft? It would be interesting if you could make it work, especially the M and N versions.
To be honest, I hadn't thought about keeping the aircraft from the previous time period. Carrier tests with Spitfires began in October 1939.

USSR
1939 to 1941
Winter War... tactics and organization of VVS is so poor that even superior equipment can hardly help...
So let's stick with what available.
I-16
DB-3.

1941 to 1943
Soviet leaders and designers try to catch up with Willy Messerschmitt. OK, let's give them the Messerschmitt.
In the heavy department, we look for something rugged to withstand the elements and with multirole capabilities, as we still believe in massive airborne assaults and we need torpedo bomber to oppose the British in the Baltics and Italians in the Black Sea (as a part of Navy doctrine).
Bf 109E/F
Wellington

1943 to 1945
Party decides to send Comrade Yakovlev to the sanatorium for the next 2 years. We return the production lines and manpower to Polikarpov. He should try to marry his latest fighter airframes with US engines if Yankees agree to deliver.
Strategic bombings and paratroop ops... oops, we tried and we failed. Transport needs can be satisfied with lend leased trucks and locomotives. A lighter bomber will suffice. It should be fast, carry more bombs than poor Il-2, have a range for other jobs besides CAS. And it's nice to have a night fighter to prevent LW from destroying our factories and oil stocks in Povolzhye. So, what to choose... In real life, Moscow pestered London with requests for Mosquito.
I-185 - with lend leased engine if possible.
Mosquito - FB Mk VI for a start and other variants after, as many as stingy capitalists agree to deliver.
