What is one plane that is underappreciated for how effective it was in combat?

It could transport an 88 but not use/fire it.
They made some gunship versions with multiple 2cm gun turrets.
But that did not change the fact they were slow and big targets. Combined with Ultra intercepts they were just easy prey.

Fairey Fulmar. The all time top scoring FAA fighter, but still considered rubbish by many. Yes, it's not going to win in dogfights against single seat, monoplane fighters, and a clean B5N will outpace the Brit, but if you're flying an unescorted multi engine torpedo strike aircraft like a SM.79 Sparviero, He.111 or Mitsubishi G4M, you don't want an eight gun Fulmar on your tail.
