Hi all,

it is well known that the "M" model of Yak-9 retained the 400 mm moved backward cockpit to make room for the Nudelman-Suranov cannon of its predecessor Yak-9T.

I wonder if the Yak-9M was ever armed with this weapon in its operational use, in lieu of the standard 20 mm ShVAK, for some production batch or as field modification.

Thanks for any help.

Hi greybeard,
To the best of my knowledge at this time, I would have to
say no. The only 37 mm armed Yak-9 was the T version.
By the time the Yak-9M came along in 1944 it was just
barely a stop-gap fighter. Its performance had fallen
considerably behind the Fw 190 and Bf 109. And then
you have to consider all the modifications that would
have to be made to accommodate the large airborne
canon, heavier steel tubing in the front structure, new
propeller and hub to accommodate the barrel and
rearrangement of the oil tank, fuel ducting and more.

Just a thought:);), Jeff

Hi Jeff!

Thank you so much for your kind and quick response. I already had doubts, but I did not think about all the details that you have specified: in fact, it is not enough to have the space only to then put the cannon.

Best regards,
Greybeard
