Zeppelin LZ93 top defensive platform and its happy gunners. It was equipped with up to three 7,92mm LMG14 Parabellum; two of them installed here. Photo taken from the top of the airship hangar around 1916/17.

Were they allowed to smoke up there? The sky car was considered choice duty because the observer could smoke.

Merchant Ships and Royal Navy kite balloons

Great images, but a wee bit of pedantism, these are not kite balloons, but are barrage balloons. Kite balloons were typically larger than these and were designed for observation, being fitted with baskets to enable observers to be lifted aloft.
