Shown here is the Type IXC boat U-516, commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Friedrich Petran, flying a black surrender flag, was photographed about 275 miles west of St Nazaire, on 10 May 1945, from a Sunderland GR Mk V flying boat of 461 ( RAAF) squadron, flown by Flight Lieutenant R. C. Allardice, based at Pembroke dock. On 2 January 1946 it was towed from Limavady, Northern Ireland to be used as a target but sank in heavy seas. ref: AIR 15/743
